Apps of the month: August
August… the perfect month to lie on your sofa and enjoy the typical laziness of the holiday season. The perfect time to watch all those videos, series, movies and shows you have missed while working. Or maybe to while away a few hours crossing roads or killing some zombies!
Kodi is… well Kodi is Kodi! It’s a powerful media centre and it’s used to manage all your media from your set-top box. With a very simple and user-friendly interface, this entertainment hub is free, open source, highly customisable and flexible (it runs on a wide range of devices and OSs).
Formerly known as XBMC, Kodi soon grabbed the attention of indie developers who have created many add-ons to enhance the user experience and make this a very powerful application. Thanks to all these “enhancements”, users can play and view most videos, music, podcasts and any other digital media files they want, from wherever they want.
If you have a lot of media stored on your TV, or set-top box, you can quickly organize it, thanks to Kodi. Any media you add after you’ve installed Kodi will automatically be sorted into the proper categories, and arranged into the locations you have defined.
Plex is a great media centre application. With not so many plugins as others, you may think that this app could be weaker… But that’s not the case! With a super simple and easy-to-navigate interface, Plex plays and recognizes any kind of video, music, or photo format you can imagine.
If you install Plex apps on all your favourite devices, you can stream all your media wherever you are, and even share them with your friends. And if you want to resume the movie or show you were watching, just select it! Plex knows where you left off, and also puts all the recent content that you added front and centre.
VLC media player
VLC media player is one of the most resilient and flexible media players in the software market. Created in 1996, as a result of an academic project, it soon become a standard on all PCs, whether Windows, MacOS or Linux.
Known for its reliability, VLC can run also from a USB flash, and can even be installed on your set-top box. But the main benefits of this app are the tons of features it has, and the ability to play most types of video content (MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, Ogg, FLAC, TS, M2TS, Wv and AAC), because it includes all codecs with no separate downloads.
Crossy Road is a typical arcade video game that swamped the world like a solar wave. Created by Hipster Whale, an Australian videogame maker, this fun game hooks anybody for hours. Easy playability, a fast pace and good adaptation to a TV set controller makes this game one of the “classics” for any TV box.
The concept of Crossy Road is very simple: you just have to cross roads, avoid getting hit by traffic and going out of the screen. You literally have to help the chicken cross the road! Why? Because she found a mate, your brain triggered a movement, or because you just want to stay alive…
Zombie Age 2
Zombie Age 2 is an “old-school” side-scrolling shooter game. Ok, it’s another zombie killer, and the market knows how many they are… But why are we talking about this one? Because it’s a funny take on this genre.
This videogame is the best way to keep your adrenaline pumping for hours in front of a TV. At the beginning, you may feel that it’s too easy just bashing zombies with a baseball bat or with bullets, but soon you’ll feel that all hell is breaking loose. Definitely, a zombie game that you have to play!
